School Garden Initiative
The Medina City Schools Communtiy Garden program is in its fourth year. The garden program is an initiative of the Medina City Schools Health and Wellness Committee. School and community gardens teach and enhance environmental attitudes, community spirit, social skills, self-confidence, leadership skills, volunteerism, motor skills, scholastic acheivement, and nutritional attitudes. School gardens can yield gratifying and often surprising results for students and adults.
Provide hands-on and service learning opportunities for Medina City Schools students, staff, and community members to work together in a positive, educational, and healthy initiative while providing Medina residents with fresh and healthy produce.
Currently, there are gardens at five schools within the district- Medina High School, A.I. Root Middle School, and Fenn, Blake and Heritage elementary schools. New gardens will be constructed this spring at Garfield and Northrop elementary schools. The new gardens are Eagle Scout Projects designed by Trevor Thompson and Danny Rodriguez from Medina Boy Scout Troop 462. Beginning in 2009, the garden program has produced fresh produce for donation to local Medina food pantries. Program volunteers include parents, students, community members, and school district staff.
Please help us grow! All garden supplies have been donated or purchsed through a grant from the Medina City Schools Foundation. There is no cost for this program to the school district. Community support will help our garden program grow. The Garden Program is in need of volutneers, garden supplies, and creative ideas.
